Calculus, Early Transcendentals James Stewart, 4th Ed. |
| Grades: |
Grades will based on a curve of 650 possible points.
Each of the four (4) midterm exams are worth
100 points, the final worth 200 points, and the
weekly in-class quizes are worth 50 points altogether.
I will give no make-ups for exams without a
written excuse from the Dean of Undergraduate
Studies, and an unexcused exam will be given
the grade zero, probably causing you to fail the course.
If you must miss an exam, I expect you to contact me and the
Dean as soon as possible (use my home number above).
There are no makeups for quizes, but I'll drop your lowest
two (2) quiz scores before computing their average.
At the end of the semester, I'll compute your grade two ways--with the quizes and without--and give you which ever letter grade comes out higher.

| How to get an A: |
Do lots of homework, read the book, and attend every class!
After each class, do as many of the assigned problems as possible.
Time permitting, there will be a short time to ask
questions about these at the beginning of the next class.
Exam tips: begin extra studying for the exam at least
a week before the test;
identify the different types of
problems in the homework and
the steps you must follow to solve each type;
do assigned problems a second or third time as well as
unassigned problems similar to the assigned ones.
|
| Calculators: |
Although a calculator is of limited use in learning the marterial in this class,
I will assume that all of you have a graphing calculator comparable
to the TI-85/86. Calculators will be excluded from at least part of
every exam. You may not use a TI-89 or any machine with symbolic capabilities
on any exam.

| Old Exams: |
Here are the midterm exams from Spring 2004, when I last taught Math 221 using
this book and schedule.
I can't say that our exams this semester will look exactly
like these, but here they are for your information.
I've shortened each exam here to one page by
eliminating white space.

challenging but worthwhile problem. "5-25" means the odd numbered
problems between 5 and 25, inclusive. "7-19 (all)" means all problems
between 7 and 19, inclusive. "[39]" means that problem 39 is assigned, time permitting; ask me in class. "12.rev" refers to the review exercises
at the end of Chapter 12.)
